DIRT: Biodynamic Wool Project

South East England Fibreshed are working in collaboration with DIRT to research the available supply and potential volume of biodynamic wool in the UK for fashion and interiors.

UNUSUWUL was commissioned as part of a cohort of designers, farmers and processors, working together facilitated by SEE Fibreshed. The goal of this project was to create a network for the production of biodynamic soil-to-soil wool textiles, regeneratively produced and processed in the UK.

For this project, Nicci developed a number of fabrics using the UNUSUWUL process working with local UK Breed Specific yarns:

  • Black Romney from Plaw Hatch farm in west Sussex

  • Lleyn also from Plaw Hatch

  • North Ronaldsay from Lauriston Farm in Essex

  • Poll Dorset from Nant Clyd, Ystwyth valley West Wales

Fibre was produced biodynamically at the above farms before being spun to request. Yarns were all hand spun by Toby at Tottles Spinners based at one end of the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire.
